Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States. Recent advances have made it possible to do this procedure with minimum blood loss and fine tune the aesthetic results. This procedure involves infiltration of the area of interest with a solution that lessens blood loss and suctioning fat with different size canulas. It will require few very small incisions that are usually imperceptible. After surgery you can expect some oozing from the sites for a day or so and usual bruising and swelling. In order to optimize the outcome by reducing swelling faster and allowing the skin to scar down in a desirable fashion, patients have to wear a compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks.
There is a limit to how much fat we can suction safely. Therefore the more patients lose prior to this procedure the better their outcome as the plastic surgeon is able to do more before reaching the limits. As such, liposuction is not a weight loss method. To the contrary it is for fine tuning and removing stubborn fat after diet and exercise have failed. As in any body contouring procedures, Dr. Hakimi will make sure that patient’s weight has been stable and there is plan for maintenance around the same weight. Any weight gain or loss could alter and lessen the aesthetic outcome.
